Author, D. Fostalove – Interview by Author, G. D. Grace

The self-published writer, D. Fostalove of Smyrna, Georgia, is author of the page-turning novel Unraveled: Sealed Lips, Clenched Fists. I had a chance to ask him a few questions, starting with how he came up with the witty title of his novel. “When the last word was written it was apparent that the Unraveling of each character was the common theme” and, as far as the Sealed Lips portion of the title goes, it pretty much represents the characters’ secrets.  The Clenched Fists reflects a range of emotions from anger, to jealousy, and animosity encountered throughout the novel – emotions that are harsh, relevant parts of the overall life experience.

Inspiration also comes with life experiences and encounters. When asked about what inspired him to write this particular novel he stated that he was moved, partly, to churn out its storyline based on a song by the openly gay, edgy, and sometimes, controversial lockless chanteuse, Meshell Ndegeocello’s song entitled “Headline.”  He connected with the message in the words that tells listeners to question what is being fed into our consciousness by mass media, an underrated message often ignored by the impressionable masses.  Out of that song, a character who challenged societal norms was born.

It’s a message that he felt compelled to convey as a writer; question everything, because too often too many blindly accept what is told as truth only to discover that much of what is pummeled into our spirits from cradle to grave is based on misinformation from questionable sources.  For example, the whole concept of Christopher Columbus discovering America – it’s been ingrained in our mental cavity since as far back as elementary school (Educators should know this is not the truth, but still their curriculum dictates that they teach it anyway).

That fiery spark of self-awareness is his special niche as a writer. He is not afraid to discuss topics considered taboo by the main stream, nor is he frightened of presenting characters in his literary work with opinions that differ from “normal” society’s viewpoints.  He has a strong narrative voice and a creative ear for dialogue, which are both open to receive and embrace constructive criticism from readers.   He feels the open and honest relationship he has with his readers is what differentiates him from a lot of writers.  The input makes for a better writing experience on his end and a better reading experience on their end.

Stepping a bit further in the mental frame of this talented literary soul, he was asked about what fueled his passion to write in the beginning.  He stated that writing is something that came natural to him.  As a youngster his imagination was extremely vivid, and he had always been fascinated by the art of storytelling – how they were told, the different perspectives, the various styles, and even the languages in which they were told.  He also realized that as he grew as a writer, the simple stories that he once wrote naturally progressed into more elaborate, complex, and sophisticated tales.

The writing talents of other authors are usually the inspiration behind those who follow in their footsteps.  Fostalove cited several who inspired him: Bil Wright, Brian Keith Jackson, Delores Phillips, L. M. Ross, Walter Mosley, and the Pulitzer Prize winning, Toni Morrison – each of their novels, he says, has made him feel intoxicated, unsettled, satisfied, and even delighted. Their unique styles of writing have a cleverness that intrigues him wholeheartedly.  From that impressive list it is easy to see that D. Fostalove is not only an author, but also a lover of literary expression.

D. Fostalove writes for the love of writing – not for fame or celebrity status that some strive to attain.  He patterns himself after many artists in the entertainment world who keep their private lives private – artists, such as Sade and Cormac McCarthy, whose works are loved and appreciated by millions of people.  He prefers for his work to speak for itself.

Intriguing is the author known as, D. Fostalove. He is currently promoting his novel through social networking sites as well as that old, reliable “word-of-mouth” method.  2011 is when he plans on embarking on a book signing tour. His novel Unraveled: Sealed Lips, Clenched Fists can be purchased on Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com, and other online retailers.

On a final note, Fostalove quotes his aspirations in the literary world as ones where his contributions will be recognized, discussed and acknowledged for their universal themes and sometimes controversial elements by future generations who read the literature from our time.  His hopes, dreams, as well as, desires will most likely come to pass, for he will leave a literary legacy behind, worthy of examination and exploration.
Author, D. Fostalove, ladies and gentlemen… a writer on the rise…
