Nicky Vanvalkenburgh : Thursday, 6/30/2011 at 1:00PM (PST) on “A Touch of Grace”

Join me, author & producer of "A Touch of Grace" on Thursday, June 30th, 2011 at 1:00pm for the interview that introduces a new genre of writing to the ATOG listeners.

Nicky Vanvalkenburgh's genre of writing is a step outside of the familiar fictional that I am accustomed to interviewing, so this show is another that is geared to the expansion of ATOG's core audience.

During this enlightening thirty minute segment, we will discuss Nicky's non-fictional book entitled, “Train Your Brain, Transform Your Life: How to Conquer ADHD In 60 Days, Without Ritalin
I know it will be an enlightening thirty minutes, and I cannot wait!

"A Touch of Grace" Returns June 2011

A Touch of Grace” is approaching 10,000 in listens and visits.  As a fairly new blog talk radio producer this is very humbling.  These last few months have yielded major challenges, but they weren’t great enough to break my spirit.

Over last couple of weeks I have managed to stay pretty visible in the social networking world, utilizing every mode of communication that I could get my hands on.  I also got real familiar with community services that offered free internet access and computer use.  Fortunately, these avenues were available, however, there were limitations that I had to adapt and adhere to.  It wasn’t so bad though, because it taught me to be disciplined to make good use of my time. My routine was, login, surf for minute, compose quickly, post the literary entries, then, log off.

Uh, huh… 1,2,3, & 4.  In that order.  LOL

So, you see, if you’re passionate about what you’re doing, you’ll do whatever you need to do to make it happen.  Dreams only unfold when we make the effort to see them through.

With that said, I’m excited about this next period of broadcasting with my blog talk radio show, “A Touch of Grace”.  There have been inquiries from several authors about being on the show, and I thrilled about the different genres of writings that will be discussed during the interviews.

The first one will be with, PHE Ink’s Jean Holloway.  We will be discussing her literary  project with the “Deck of Cards” theme.  The first two attempts to make this happen were unsuccessful due to scheduling conflicts, so we’re both anxious to make this happen.  We’ll be firming up a date for that show in the next couple of days.  In the meantime, if you’d like to venture into Jean’s world, her links are below.

Stay fresh, and stay inspiried…

I Am Love (reflections of a writer) GD 6-7-2011

You
I had all of these images in my head with You in mind.

I suppose if I would have paid attention to the signs in the beginning I would have accepted things as they were as opposed to how I wanted to see them.

I had formulated all of  these ideas about you, me, we & us.

Nothing I felt inside prepared me for the inevitable.

I remember how my heart would skip a beat whenever I heard your car door slam outside my window.

I had anticipated your arrival the night before, hours before your car pulled into my driveway.

Throughout the day I thought about how we would be spending the evening.

Listening to music.

Watching TV.

Cuddling on the sofa in silence.

Me massaging your neck and back with intensity and focus.

Me rubbing both of your feet to ease the tightness from the long day you spent standing and walking on them.

How I adored you.

You introduced me to pleasures I had long desired to experience.

Lying beside you at night were amongst the most tender moments we shared.

I loved immersing myself in pillow talk with you.

Remember when I asked you if Ringling Brothers was in town because I was their missing clown?

Remember how you reached for me and pulled me into your warmth, and how you consoled me, assured me  that everything was going to be alright?

Then there was that song you dedicated to us by Algebra entitled "At This Time".

Looking back I know that it was your way of telling me that I needed to just enjoy the moments we were sharing at the time, but it was hard for me not to fall in love with you.

You were the right combination of sex appeal, sensuality, and strength.

Because I had found in you something that I had never found in anyone else I wanted to hold onto you as tightly as i could, and I prayed so hard that you would be the one that I would grow old with.

I asked God if he would make you see what was inside of me so that you would know just how much love I had to offer you.

Letting you go was one of the hardest things that I have ever had to do, yet I knew that if I allowed things to continue without parameters then I would not be fulfilled in the relationship.

Towards the end I felt you rejecting my love and I know that it was because you didn't want me to love you as much as I did.

The person you were when I met you still existed, but you knew there was no way for you to embrace all we could have been when there was still someone else who had your heart.

I eventually understood that.

I knew that there was no way that I could compete with an unfinished past, therefore the only thing I could do was set you free.

Oh, I was hurt, confused, and angry afterward, but eventually I made peace with things.

I found solace in knowing that you knew how special you were to me, and I am grateful that you allowed me to walk away without trying to string me along.

You were a great lover in my life, and I will never forget you.

There are times when I find myself hoping that our paths would cross again.

That the next time around we'd both be ready to take the journey.

You see...

I am who I was that night when you met me...

I Am Love

It and They... (Reflections of a writer) GD 6-7-201

It seems, sometimes, that there are dark storm clouds that ascend and claim the blueness of sky for extended periods of time, and during those moments it gets hard to believe that there will ever be sunshine again, but we know that there will be because, eventually, the transformation from gray to white occurs.

When the scent of a recent rainfall fills the essence of air it smells clean and we feel renewed.  Over the years I've learned to appreciate unpleasant times and I deem them as purposeful events, for within them faith expands and in the aftermath there is always reason and a lesson that has been learned.

Emerging from rocky episodes that have pummeled the spirit are exhausting experiences, but when I look back on each and every one they always remind me of where I've been and what I've made it through.  Had I succeeded in cashing in all of my chips during the darkest moments of despair, I would have never been able to receive the blessings that came as a result of perseverance.

Every day above ground makes us all survivors.  I am constantly reminding myself to never take anything or anybody for granted, because in the blink of an eye it and they could all be gone.

It is a blessing to have family, friends, & a life to live.

They are all priceless luxuries in life.

The conversation I had with my cousin this morning, and the one I had last night with a good friend, and the ones I had the last week with my aunt, and the ones prior that I had with my mother, sister, niece & nephew...

Those and They are Priceless....

Treasure life...

The Literary Marketing Education of Author G. D. Grace (6-6-2011)

When I set out on this journey back in 2009, I had no idea what I was doing.  The only thing I knew is that I wanted to write books, and that's exactly what I did.  I currently have five full novels out in circulation right now, but I had no idea how to market myself.  So, here I am, a couple of years later still growing as a writer and researching the available avenues to market the G. D. Grace brand.

As I sit on the cusp of yet another release, "Daddy", I am just as thirsty as I was when released my first self-published book, "Knights of Deception".  As a self-published author I have obtained the knowledge I have now through trial and error mostly, however, I have learned a great deal from other authors I have networked with on Facebook, or interviewed on the blog talk radio show, "A Touch of Grace", that I produce.

"A Touch of Grace" began on September 2nd, 2010 and it was a first for me.  I was introduced to the world of blog talk radio by, Robert Wesley Branch, who interviewed me back in March of 2010.  Over the summer I honed my interviewing skills participating in his blog talk radio show, and then through natural progression I stepped out on my own and started mine.

So, here I sit in a position where that next level is before me.   I started another Blog on Google entitled: Author G. D. Grace's LIterary Blog 2, and I enrolled myself into the Google APSense program.  Currently I am educating myself on how to maximize my earning potential with it.  I've also registered with Linked In, another social networking forum for professionals to further broaden the Author G. D. Grace footprint.

These last couple of days I have not only been editing and adding more material to my 6th novel, I have also been investing in gaining knowledge of the marketing side of this literary business.  LULU, the self-publishing website I use has been extremely instrumental in making my dreams become a reality.  I remember tuning into the tutorials that they provided and I learned a great deal about branding.  Either you chose to brand your product (the book), or your name.  I chose the latter, branding my name, knowing that  I was going to publish many.
In order to grow, I make it a point to interact with as many like-minded individuals as I can, opening myself up to learning from them as, I hope, many are learning from me.  I also have surrounded myself with some real movers and shakers in this literary game.  I had to weed out individuals who weren't going in the same direction as I was, not because I think I'm better than them, because that isn't the case.  I have a thorough understanding that progressive individuals are the ones who are focused on their goals, and diligently work at perfecting this craft.  I consider myself to be one of them, therefore, the energy and encouragement shared between us elevates our efforts and spirits.

And so, as I embark on this next level in the literary world, I take with me the lessons I've learned from the past, and embrace the circle of professionals that I have been blessed to be associated with.  There is a short story I wrote entitled, "July's Independence" slated to be published in magazine publisher, Tiffany Lewis', July 2011 edition, and the interview I participated in with magazine publisher, Cleavester Brooks, that appears in the premiere edition of his SGL BookLovers  magazine -- currently in circulation.

Well, this is the eduction of Author G. D. Grace.  I'm anxious to learn the marketing side of this business and ambitious enough to drive myself in an ethical fashion towards success.

With positive vibes I push forward, and leave this particular entry with an original GD quote:

"...I am not envious of your success, I am inspired by it"

Push on, fellow authors and artists... push on.

From the Eyes of a Child (reflections of a writer) GD 6-6-2011

In the three-bedroom one bath home where I grew up, there were joyful times that outweighed the harsh realities associated with life.  In the tiny, urban community where I spent my formative years there were African-American Families with a mother and father present in the household, and ours was no exception.

Our outdoor activities consisted of relay racing, hide-and-go-seek, bike riding, and strolls along a trail beside the dikes (which was very much an adventure for us).  The trail curved along the water's edge for a few miles.  The winter rains dictated how high the waters would rise, and sometimes it would rain so much that the waters would spill over the banks.  I felt sorry for the people who lived closest to that area because flooding occurred sometimes.

Growing up in that community was relatively cool.  There were plenty of other kids to romp around and converse with.  Some families had more capital than others, so they'd have more toys or larger purchases such as Campers & Boats, or fancier cars.  Our family did alright.  We used to go on fishing trips, out of state road trips, and there were even occasional air travel trips back south or east.

The sanctity of our household had it's share of moments where arguments between adults echoed off of the walls -- there were even moments where the heated words escalated to the physical point.  From the eyes of a child things appeared larger than what they possibly were.  Me being more of a passive spirit, those explosive episodes seemed more magnified.  I had no idea at the time what was going on, the only thing I knew is that, while they were going on, I along with my siblings were trapped in the middle.

This recount of my childhood is no more or less important in the grand scheme of things.  I know that there are others who had far worse experiences growing up, so I'm just grateful to God that things weren't worse for us.   The scars, however, do linger.  I had no idea how much these occurrences would affect my spirit until later in life.  Fortunately I worked through much of the hangups I had and am functioning in a healthy mental state, finally.
It was a lot of work getting here though.  When I interact with younger individuals I always try to encourage them in whatever they are interested in doing.  I can never forget what it was like being a child.  The encouragement you look for from the adults in your life doesn't always materialize because some of them haven't worked through their own hangups, so their inability to rationally communicate with one another is a given.  I promised myself that I would never subject a child to any of that.

Screaming and yelling matches in a home where a child is present is damaging.  Much of what we learn as children comes from what we've witnessed as children.  Even our value structure.  Me, I have always been the type to forge out my own path in life.

I remember when I first discovered how much of an issue my sexuality was for members of the family and the church.  It's no wonder why, for a large portion of my life, I felt like their was something wrong with me.  I felt like I was damaged goods.  A statement over the weekend took me back in time.   It fell along the lines of a parent wondering why their child was not showing interest in the opposite sex.  I suppose what made me cringe was that it was being said in front of me and this person knows about my sexuality.

The statement triggered the strength from my wisdom. What part don't some people get? Sexuality is not a choice!  I felt for the child in question, because I knew that if they are not heterosexual, then the road ahead for them is going to be a rock y one because, the parent let it be known in their statement, that their child had better be interested in the opposite sex.

Had better be.  As if their threat alone will make their child be or not be heterosexual.  It really is quite laughable.  I could have added my two cents after it was said, but why bother?  Deeply rooted beliefs and personal expectations of a parent are delicate subjects that I for one have no desire to tamper with.  I do know that, at some point, everyone has to step out from beneath their parents wing and fly on their own.

In this life you either stand for something, or nothing at all.  I chose to stand, confidently on my own and embrace who I am.  My spiritual soul is very much in tact.  I am not into the organized religion thing, and don't knock those who are.  We are all entitled to worship as we wish.  At the final call, we need to know that we lived our lives according to and lived up to our own expectations.

A life lived with regrets, often times, is a bitter one.

Arguing this point isn't part of my character.   Other people's opinions and beliefs are their own, and I'm not working overtime to force my values on another.  I am also not willfully engaging in heated discussions about my personal beliefs.  When it comes to politics, religion, and sexuality, I am firm believer in the "to each his own" train of thought.

Well, today has been a pretty productive one.  I am currently working diligently on completing my sixth novel, "Daddy".  Outside my window there are beautiful flowers and a slight breeze blowing, and I hope that the first day of your work week has been as peaceful and productive as mine.

In the Light of Love (Reflections of a Writer) GD 6-4-2011

On this road I travel, please allow my life to inspire someone in need of inspiration, because I know how hard it can get sometimes.  The fears, the doubts, the feelings of worthlessness can overtake the spirit, but it is resilient, and it can rise up from the ruins of despair.  There have been days that have seemed so dark, and nights that have been unbearable, yet we always manage to get through somehow -- the lucky ones.

Sometimes I wonder way too much about too many things such as, the wicked ways of some, and the suffering of others.   Our purpose here in this existence is beyond definition.  Many of us drift in and out of uncertainty and anguish, battling for a place to be, using the achievements of others as a catalyst to climb up the ladder of success, and I'm wondering how anyone could bare the guilt associated with robbing someone of their hard work.

We all have our own star to claim as our own.  Against the blackness of a night sky it is visible if only we look upward, and when we reach for it without shame, or hesitation, we can possess it's beauty throughout our days.

I don't know too much about what is and what isn't right... the only thing I know is what I feel inside, and it doesn't require someone dictating to me from a pulpit how I should act, what I should feel, and who I can love.  My thought process may not be in alignment with the perceptions of the "leaders", however, I trust my soul and my heart.

I don't profess to be a saint, nor do I deem anyone else to be one.  I just know that we are all here for only a short time, and I live my life in the light of love...

Yeah, that's how I live my life.  In the light of love.

-night-night

Darien - CD "If These Walls Could Talk" a G. D. Grace Review

I Heard about this talented, soulful crooner on the music website, SoulTracks, and after hearing one song, "Composure"  I went online and purchased the entire CD, "If These Walls Could Talk".

I suppose what captured my ears were the touching and heartwarming lyrics to all of the songs on this classic project.

I have been a lover of music for as long as I can remember, and as a writer myself I am drawn to the honest, clean,  & rich-in-content forms of musical expression.

Darien's passionate approach in his vocal delivery is artistic expression at its best, and his live performances elevate the entire feel to the next level.  The summer when this CD was in heavy rotation on my CD player had been a challenging one -- I had stepped out on faith and left a 26 year career at a fortune 500 company.  There were several CD's that captured that space in time and will forever be part of the soundtrack that was my life at that moment -- "If These Walls Could Talk" is one of them.

I had the honor of exchanging correspondence with Darien on MySpace, as well as, on his blog, and found him to be a very kind and warm individual. The networking interaction with him further confirmed that what he sings about is real and from his heart.  His musical contributions are in alignment with many of the artist that I have listened to over the years; from Teena Marie to Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder to George Michael, The Gap Band to Cameo, Anita Baker to Phyllis Hyman, Sade to Maxwell, Aretha Franklin to Peobo
Bryson, and Basia to Swing Out Sister.

The list of artists mentioned above are part of  a wide range of other artists too numerous to count but, one thing for sure, I am attracted to real singers who utilize studio technology to get the product out, and not those who use it to enhance the message of a song.  Instruments and vocals and a clever, moving arrangement are the ingredients that capture my heart.

One of the more touching songs on "If These Walls Could Talk" is the cut, "Seasons".  The words are timeless, deep, and spiritual for me.  It took me a minute to get to it because it is a track closer to the end of the CD.  I was so immersed in all the ones at the beginning that  it took me a minute to reach the end of the CD.  -LOL
That's how I roll though.  If a CD is good, I will wear out each and every song.  Depending on my mood, anyone of them will become my favorite. And I will also replay the entire CD for years and years.
Darien's star has been rising quickly.  He's been performing all over the world, and his audience is expanding with every performance.  I'm thankful to be able to locate artist that, unfortunately, aren't recognized by mainstream media.  Eventually though, mainstream media does catch on but, thankfully, for music lovers like me, independent artists are allowed to shine prior to gaining mainstream attention with the availability of social networking sites like: Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.

If you'd like to keep up with Darien's whereabouts and learn more about this fantastic musical performer, drop by his blog link (below).  And if you haven't copped the CD "If These Walls Could Talk", then drop by SoulTracks or Amazon and drop some "duckets".

This is GD, bringing it to you from his own words.

“Some People…” – (Reflections of a writer) GD 6-4-2011

The best part of me has to be my heart.  I remember my late grandmother, "Mama", assuring me that I would forgive my brother for using my ID to save his tail from the "Po-Po".  I had to go through the court system to get my ID re-instated not once, not twice, but three times.  I was so dang pissed that I just knew that I wouldn't forgive him, but then as usual, just as she predicted, and with the passage of time, the anger dissipated and I did, in fact, forgive him.

That's the way it has always been for me too.  My kind heart has always left me wide open for opportunistic predators.  I don't blame them in the least though.  I pity them for being selfish insecure individuals.  I hope that doesn't sound too judgmental, because that isn't my intent.

Something that tickles the hell out of me now is a statement that this old "kooster" made indirectly at me.  He pretty much said that "...if someone gives me something that's on them.  They the fools, because I'm gonna take everything I can get from them, but they don't need to look to me for nothing.  I don't feel sorry for them either, that's their fault for being stupid..."  This is an actual quote that came from someone who I, at one time, called my best friend.   -LOL  His cowardice amuses me.  I cannot help but pity him.

So, you know, you get to this place in your life when you evaluate your situation and who you are surrounded by.  Then you make a conscious decision to communicate and educate them on what you value in friendship, in hopes that they will grasp onto any part of that clue you're tying to convey to them.

You explain that you don't appreciate the attacks on your character, your attire, or your points of view.  You make a desperate effort to retain and hold onto the closeness that you once shared during the early beginnings of the friendship.  You warn them that if they don't stop talking to you like you have a tail (and even animals deserve respect) the way that they do, then they'll lose you.

I recall asking this one friend of mine if she learned anything from me.  I added that I always learned things from her.  I studied her face after I had presented her with question, and my heart broke inside, because I knew that, just by her smug smirk, that  she was too self-absorbed to even fathom admitting to me that she learned things from me.

Another type of person that used to slide in under the radar is the "Passive Hustler".  They are pretty sneaky.   Their quiet, respectful, smiling face harbors a subtle hustle that took a few years for me to identify.  When I did I had an aha! moment.  I suppose the biggest thing I learned about them is that they really are kind souls, but the bottom line is that, even though they won't hustle the draws off of you, they will hustle you to the point just before hustling the draws of you.  -LOL

So, here I am, once again, settled into a cozy peaceful location.  Yet another stop on this journey I'm on.  I'm excited about what I will accomplish in this new spot.  The aura here is definitely good food for the creative spirit.  Even the people here have peaceful auras -- now, ignorance is sometimes bliss, but for right now I am content.   I also know that, to keep things in perspective, it's up to me to establish healthy boundaries.
In general, I will never stop believing in and seeing the best in individuals.  I know that past experiences usually dictate how people live their lives.  Some people internalize the hurt and it transforms them into souls unable to trust or love fully, ever again.  That is sad, because what that means is that anyone who winds up being in a relationship with them will always be a suspect, rather than being a soul mate.

As we evolve our thoughts and ideas about things change -- especially when we're honest with ourselves.  I mean, I  used to play the victim in the scenarios I mentioned above, but now I know that we are responsible for how we allow folks to treat us.  We don't have to stay in a situation for as long as we do.  We don't have to put up with mistreatment by others individuals for as long as we do.  We don't have to turn the other cheek over and over again the way we do.  No, we do have a choice, always.

Well, I'm not sure if this makes any sense to anyone but me.  I have a lot of stored up stuff in my head so I'm getting it out to make room for the novel I'm writing.  I'll go back and read this later.

Anyways, I hope things are going well for you, and that you are at a place in your life when you can embrace who you are, and love yourself unconditionally.

Keep your head to the sky, and keep the faith
